The Ben Player Project.
The Ben Player Project is a movie about 2 time World Champion and Bodyboard King Team Rider Ben Player.
Here's a review from Transit surf on it.
Profile video’s are far from a new concept with the likes of former world champions Mike Stewart, Damien King and bodyboarding super star Ryan Hardy all having productions showcasing their skills and personalities. With this in mind it was refreshing to see The Ben Player Project take a unique approach to profiling one of bodyboardings most influential and recognizable identities by following him on his way to a second world title.
As with any profile film your initially presented with the to be expected history lesson. There’s a whole bunch of footage collected from Ben’s early years on q-boards with narration provided by Ben’s older brother Toby. The introduction highlights Ben’s desire to achieve in the competitive field and raises the rivalry between Ben and Damian King which is an interesting insight given the latest peer poll comments from Ben. From here however is really where the video steps into over drive as we are shown just what it takes to be a true title holder.
The Blackrock section is amazing. The best way to describe the level of riding shown would be to drawn a comparison to Ryan Hardy at North Point or Mike Stewart at Pipeline. As if he was completely in his element every move seems to come with ease and his knowledge of this wave is unparalleled. From air forwards coming out of the pocket or reverse airs being performed off almost anything resembling a hittable section. The tone for the rest of the video is set with chapters comprising of his world travels both free surfing and for competition.
From Bali, Hawaii, Canaries and beyond the action is non stop. The video transitions between each chapter are nicely done and bring back memories of the Riptide Revolution video with smooth lines abundant. Each filled with odd and quirky facts ranging from the amount of time he spent posing for photos in Chile to the amount of hours surfing that went into the Canaries section.
Musically the soundtrack is near flawless. Each song chosen perfectly matches what is shown on screen and really sets the mood. The mix is diverse with bands such as TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Mercy Arms plus old school melodies provided by the likes of Iggy Pop and Pink Floyd.
The Ben Player Project is a terrific example on what a profile video should aspire to be. Despite the fact that 90% of the riding is of Ben it doesn’t come across as egotistical with the variety of moves and locations providing ample variety to keep you entertained for the full course of the feature and beyond.
Here's a teaser for the movie.
